I'm a hipster, you're a hipster

A single flannie does not a hipster make. Well in my case it does. I tried to explain what hipster culture means and stands for, but I quickly found out it doesn't stand for much. More of a non-culture. There is a certain style that hipsters typically have but that is centered around finding stupid things to promote, ironically.

Hipsters are very protective to all those that they hold "sacred" which confuses me since they deny that they really ever honestly enjoy something. But there is a sort of right of passage into becoming a hipster, one will be approached by a hipster type person who will then begin to quiz you on your favorite bands, movies and places to eat. The safe response to any of these questions is to say that your most listened to band is Synonymous Repercussions and that they are based in San Fransisco and that you went to see them last year while you were there. A safe response to your favorite movie should be Cargo, which is a Swiss/German sci-fi movie with great cinematography (hipsters love foreign cinema, the further away from Hollywood the better). Acceptable favorite eateries and drinkeries include any farmer's market or Whole Foods, any place that sells coffee or teas that aren't Gloria Jeans or Starbucks. Sports clubs are right out! Thats where the tradies commune.

The joke at the beginning where a say "a pelvic, giant, combustible, gaseous solar body" might require some explaination. That sort of defeats the point of it being a joke but meh. Pelvic means hip and giant, combustible, gaseous solar bodies are all descriptors of stars, ergo hipstar. My inner comedian is getting angry at my nerdier side for needing to over-explain everything. Speaking of nerds, Jonah Ray of the Nerdist podcast has a great little rant and explanation of hipster culture. Its about 10 minutes from the end. Nerdist Podcast Defines Hipsters

Thank you all for reading and watching what I put out into the world. Please enjoy.

Thoughts from places: Sydney

The VlogBrothers influence strikes again! I have been harboring this footage (no pun intended) for a month or so now. I filmed it while on youth conference in Sydney (no duh), and I though I might have something profound to say. It turned out not to be the case but I made a video anyway.

The main goal of this video was to make people laugh (as is with all my videos), but also to get people to think about connotations particularly about locations. The actual "Thoughts" part of my video seems a little disheveled, because it is, and lets pretend I meant it to be this way. It's really hard to make things seem organized when they aren't organized in your mind. Organization is  good skill to have, but so are good improv skills. Seeing an old looking church in Australia shocked me a little; firstly because I didn't know Australia was ever religious, secondly because I didn't know things were that old in Australia and thirdly because I realized I don't know that much Australian history (I have a good excuse though). Thats how I got the idea to do a "Thoughts from Places" style video.

There was a lot of footage I wasn't able to use because some people got in the shot or because I forgot to press the red button which allows the camera to capture the photons. I hope you got the jist of what I am trying to say in this masterful piece of Internet Culture. Thank you for reading my blog and watching my videos, I would send out love to all of you but I don't have the appropriate organ for compassion or empathy. GET OFF MY LAWN HIPSTER!

VidCon but you can't

Lets see some rationale here. VidCon (short for ViddConn) is the annual YouTube gathering which held in Southern California and founded by the VlogBrothers: Hank and John Green. Most of the worth while YouTubers show up unless they are doing something better for the world, so naturally Ray William Johnson didn't go. Because he isn't worth watching not because he is doing something better. All the people I draw to as inspiration and influences from YouTube are there and having a good time, partying and meeting their fans. I thought that meeting my idols would be the best way to get them to meet me and find out who I am. If I approach them on the Internet I feel like just another nerd pushing up his glasses and saying in a nasally voice "hey, you guys are awesome, maybe you would like my stuff too." This makes sense in my head. They probably get a lot of requests like that. And I also think that my real persona is my funnier side, and If they saw they would like me more. I just need human approval and if it was from masters in the field it would mean a lot more. But I realized I would make videos weather I got anywhere with it or not, just because I have to be funny and I really enjoy the process. I am happy with the stuff I am putting out and apparently other people are too.

*If you noticed, before I confessed that I didn't actually attend VidCon, I inhaled. So Inhalation for Confession is the name of my Maroon 5 cover band, you would be surprised how many people didn't get it.

Get off my lawn, hipster!

Hey people who might know who I am, thanks for reading this far.
I have been putting content out on the Internet for about a year now, so I thought a blog might be a nice, quicker [than making videos] way to share my thoughts. My name is Joshua Glass from Brisbane, Australia but I live in Canberra now. I only spent about five years living in Brisbane but I still identify myself as a Queenslander. I have spend most of my life in Canberra but who really cares about that? I love to travel but I hate getting lost in foreign cities, it happens to be my worst fear. I have been to more countries than I have birthdays, it's not like I planed it that way or even wanted to go to all of them (#humblebrag). I started making little video blogs or vlogs if you are a fan of portmanteaus, and some people think they are pretty funny, maybe I will keep it up.
You will find out the things I like and would like to do in the future, or just look at my profile and my YouTube channel.  http://www.youtube.com/user/JoshTheLostAuzzie?feature=mhee <------
More posts will be on their way, please be my friend.
